About the Residency

Jake Cooper will be using The Projection Room space to expand his most recent work and research in the Japanese craft of ‘Akari’.

Akari

Paper and bamboo light sculptures by Jake Cooper

This technique will be used on a larger scale to create an immersive installation that is inspired by the projection and distortion associated with cinemas.

The Paignton Picture House will directly inform and inspire the forms he plans to create with the ‘Akari’ technique. Jake’s aim is to always create personal and unpredictable moments of connecting with light through witnessing its potential for intricacy, precision, and imagination.
