Joy Scrolling! Magic Lantern and Crankie Show

  • The Projection Room 11 Torbay Road Paignton, England, TQ4 6AA United Kingdom (map)

Travel back in time to the days before cinema, when people would gather together in the parlour or theatre to watch a Magic Lantern show or enjoy a moving picture story on a scroll, otherwise known as a crankie, and sometimes a panorama.

Join crankie maker and singer Wendy Dacre and (in a change to the original programme) Magic Lanternist / Peep Show entertainer Dr. Tony Lidington for a mesmerizing journey through time and imagination! Experience the magic of painted slides projected through light with vintage Magic Lanterns, captivating handcrafted moving story scrolls (Crankies), and enchanting pre-cinematic Peep Show performances. A unique blend of storytelling, artistry, and old-world entertainment awaits!

*NEW TO THE PROGRAMME*

' The Wonder of All Wonders' by Dr Tony Lidington AKA Uncle Tacko!

This illustrated talk provides the background and history of pre-cinematic peepshows and their presenters - the raree men. Tony has developed his own peepshow in collaboration with the Bill Douglas Cinema Museum and uses this to explain how showmanship and technological optical devices provided the foundation of cinema, television and now the gaming age.

Suitable for all ages from 12+. Tickets on pay-what-you-feel basis.
