Echoes: Paignton in Motion

  • Paignton Picture House 2 Queen's Park Road Paignton, England, TQ4 6AH United Kingdom (map)

Paignton Picture House comes alive with projections & soundscape ...

The Picture House kick-starts into being with the birth of film. A giant rotating zoetrope brings the facade to life as a motion picture machine. Through its internal machinery this contraption reflects and echos the surrounding area. We reflect on the past and the present, before gently putting the building to bed for it’s long hibernation ahead of its grand opening next year.

Produced by The Media Workshop, with guest artists Kelly Bryant, Hugh Malyon & Steve Sowden. Inspired by the work of Eadweard Muybridge, the Lumière brothers, Philo Farnsworth & Thomas Edison this site-specific work draws on the rich history of motion pictures, the historical context of Paignton Picture House, railway and surrounding area.

Booking

The event is free and accessible for all outside Paignton Picture House to see.

To hear the soundscape you will need to book a slot with our ‘silent disco headsets’. Each slot has 100 headsets available. Pre-booked ticket-holders do not need to leave a deposit, but walk-ups will need to pay £5 cash deposit per headset payable on collection and refunded on return.

We’ll be releasing tickets in phases to give plenty of chances for people to listen in, starting with 7pm on each night. Tickets will be released for hourly and then half-hourly slots over the coming weeks. The looped projection will run between:

  • Friday 25th October: 7pm-10pm

  • Saturday 26th October: 7pm - 10pm

  • Sunday 27th October: 6pm - 9pm

Access & Environment

This event is outdoors, on flat ground with a road closure in place for public safety. There is not seating, but the piece is of short duration (approx 15 mins). Dress for the weather - there is some limited shelter in case of rain.

While You’re There…

Look out for the concurrent exhibition (23rd-27th October) in The Projection Room, with more info about Echoes: Paignton in Motion and a chance to look at some of the work up close.
