Squeezebox: Artists in Residence

  • The Liberal Club 1-5 Totnes Road Paignton, England, TQ4 5JX United Kingdom (map)

We’re delighted to welcome back Squeezebox as Wide Open’s Artists in Residence for October. The Squeezebox team will be at The Liberal Club Paignton between 7-11th October, preparing for their performance at The Northcott Theatre, Exeter, part of Elevate Festival. You can find out more about their performance and Elevate here.

In a system that requires us to fit into boxes, what space is left for humanity?

SqueezeBox opens up conversation on care as universal experiences through installation, performance and workshops. SqueezeBox brings together humour, radical tech, lo-fi instruments, care & community voices, journeying through raw lived experience of disability being distorted beyond recognition by dehumanising systems of assessment.

SqueezeBox expands dialogue around disability, care & connection. Hugh’s first-hand experience of relentless examinations & assessments, leaves him well placed to create an honest depiction of the emotional battles from joy to despair, desolation to solidarity.

“Squeeze Box is a creative organism, a mycelium of makers, supporting Hugh Malyon’s artistic vision and disabled-led practise. Our process enables understanding of humanity’s power, whilst developing as a care-centred transdisciplinary collective, combining projection artist, live musician, BSL, access facilitation and an upsurge of creatives filling the possibilities in-between.”
