Come along and share your stories at the Paignton Picture House on Saturday 23rd September from 15:00 – 16:45.
Do any of you have any stories, memories and experiences of the Paignton Picture House? You are invited to share these as part of Kelly Bryant’s project.
Free, no need to book
Kelly Bryant is artist-in-residence at Paignton Picture House, creating a installation inside the auditorium that reflects the layered history of the building and the stories held within its walls. Layers of wallpaper from the different decades, the original 1914 mosaic flooring seen through layers of vinyl, peeling acrylic paint, the cracks, the crevices, the textures, the light, shadows and dust – it all holds a story.
Found materials, surfaces and textures from the building itself, along with stories, images and sounds collected with Sound Communities, are brought together through a 3D sculptural screen that audiences can enter and experience. Original music is interwovenwith recorded memories and stories of the cinema. Audiences can sit inside the installation and have their images merged with its history: ‘A Selfie with the Paignton Picture House’.
Sound Designer Jonas Bjerketvedt is working with young producers from Sound Communities to design audio for the work. Jonas is known for his work in Hip Hop culture and is a pioneer of Norwegian speaking rap music/ soundscapes with band Pen Jakke, Palasse of Pleasure, EPA and Lokal Business.
‘The Screen’ is being created by sculptor Tony Weaver. You can follow the progress of Kelly and her creative team here on Instagram.
