Kelly Bryant is artist-in-residence at Paignton Picture House, creating an installation inside the auditorium that reflects the layered history of the building and the stories held within its walls. Layers of wallpaper from the different decades, the original 1914 mosaic flooring seen through layers of vinyl, peeling acrylic paint, the cracks, the crevices, the textures, the light, shadows and dust – it all holds a story.
Found materials, surfaces and textures from the building itself, along with stories, images and sounds collected with Sound Communities, are brought together through a 3D sculptural screen that audiences can enter and experience. Original music is interwoven with recorded memories and stories of the cinema. Audiences can sit inside the installation and have their images merged with its history: ‘A Selfie with the Paignton Picture House’.
Sound Designer Jonas Bjerketvedt is working with young producers from Sound Communities to design audio for the work. Jonas is known for his work in Hip Hop culture and is a pioneer of Norwegian speaking rap music and soundscapes with band Pen Jakke, Palasse of Pleasure, EPA and Lokal Business.

Access
Entrance is through the main door on Torbay Road with steps. Audiences without mobility needs will enter via the main door and walk through the auditorium guided by low level lighting. Wheelchair users enter and leave through the side entrance on Queens Park Road. Once inside the installation, there are 10 fixed cinema seats with sufficient room for wheelchair access.
Paignton Picture House is currently in an unrestored condition. Expect modest levels of dust particles and an unheated environment that may be unsuitable for people with certain health conditions.
