Wander the streets of Paignton where unexpected spaces are being transformed into immersive storytelling environments. Watch projected archive footage of past movie stars, hear the voices of today’s residents narrating their lives, spot dancing figures, shadow shows in doorways, and listen to the echoes of song.
Created by Cornwall-based dance artist Rob Mennear and his creative team, Moving Portraits explores the relationship between people’s stories and public architecture, creating immersive worlds which are cinematic in atmosphere.

What to expect?
Inspired by Paignton's collection of stories and curiosities from past and present, the Moving Portraits team and Paignton community have designed a performance trail experience from the Picture House to Palace Theatre. A little like a treasure hunt with stories and displays as the prize. A little like a giant museum exhibition and theatre show but without the red rope and proscenium arch. Be guided along the high street and inside old shops, pass through tattoo parlours, and visit telephone boxes before settling into The Palace Theatre for the final act of live performance and film.
What will I be asked to do?
This guided trail will take 90 minutes. As a small group, you will be taken on the trail by a guide. The first 45 minutes will involve walking from the Picture House to Palace Theatre, stopping off to view a shop window, enter shops and complete the treasure hunt. As you arrive at the Palace Theatre there will be a chance to get a drink and take a seat to enjoy the second act indoors.
What should I bring?
We recommend you wear comfortable shoes for walking in and bring a coat or umbrella to stay warm and dry between each space - just in case! You can purchase refreshments at The Palace Theatre. The performance is at after dark, so a torch or phone may also be helpful after the show.
Don’t forget to check out free creative opportunities listed on the Wide Open website to get involved with this fantastic project, and be part of the work, from 22 September onwards.
