We are pleased to welcome Lottie Bolster as our June artist in residence, bringing people together through her residency: 'We are here: m/others of Torbay'. Find out about Lottie and how you can get involved.
The Residency
'We are here: m/others of Torbay' brings the local community together through the shared experience of m/othering.
To m/other is 'to look after (someone) kindly and protectively.' Torbay has many mothers: biological mothers, foster mothers, adoptive mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, mother figures, and individuals who care and protect. The act of m/othering unites us across social and cultural divides. Yet every experience is a unique journey, with its own set of trials and tribulations, joys and wonders, highs and lows. Each of these is a story which deserves space to be heard.
Lottie will be listening to the local community to gather stories to create artwork inspired by what she’s heard. To be a part of the project and contribute your experience drop in, attend a workshop or email sara@filament.org.uk
About the artist
Lottie is a Torbay-based visual artist and mental health advocate. She works across art, health and social justice using a range of media to share personal stories, both her own and others', which counter common assumptions and stereotypes.
Originally working in medical sciences (Physiology BA, Oxford, Clinical Neuroscience MSc, Kings College London), Lottie retrained as an artist (MA in Art and Science, Central Saint Martin's). Since becoming a mother in 2020, her work has centred on motherhood and mental health.
She was awarded the 2019 Art & Science prize, and has exhibited in the UK and internationally, including at CERN, Tate Modern and Somerset House.
