About the artist
Inez uses storytelling, theatre improvisation and movement to open our imaginations to new possibilities.
She co-founded Tales to Live By, a community mental health project based in Plymouth, delivering regular Living Room events for people to gather and share their stories, poetry, music and anything they feel passionate about. They are launching a new series of Re-Story Yourself workshops, where people learn how to use storytelling to reframe life’s challenges and grow acceptance and inner resilience.
Previously, Inez was Lead Facilitator for Integr8 UK, offering refugees and asylum seekers in Devon opportunities to experience connection, belonging and purpose in their new communities. She co-designed and facilitated their intercultural programmes, working with people from across the globe.
The Residency
‘Un|Earthed’ is all about Inez’ own journey of discovery - of ancestors, of far away places, of freedom. It is all about personal stories of belonging, roots, migration and our sense of home. When 20 years ago Inez Aponte first began to search for her Surinamese grandmother’s lineage, she met a dead end. The woman whose culture she had inherited was a mere footnote in her family tree - “Of Non-White Descent”. Only when the Dutch slave registers were made available online in 2018 was she able to trace her ancestors back to the plantations where they were enslaved.
Inez invites you to share your own stories, thoughts and feelings about these topics, and to come to her live performance, workshop or come and meet her. What’s your story of home, roots, belonging?
Through July, Inez will be connecting with people in Paignton, with specific days in Unit 5, Community Lounge in Victoria Square.
